10 Things we can learn from horror movies

A month or so back, I wrote a post about the little things we do each day that makes us happy and keeps our wellbeing in check. In this post I spoke about watching horror movies and mentioned a few rules to live by when it comes to them. These are points I have taken from watching them. You may feel they resonate with you, but you may have many more of your own.

Grab a cuppa and see what you think.

Always check the back seat of your carUrban Legend. This makes good sense, particularly if you are driving alone at night. The girl in the movie didn’t and it didn’t end well. Anyway, I’m not here to scare you, but check it. I had a particularly scary experience when I was in my early 20’s. I worked at a supermarket part time and for each holiday occasion they would decorate the store and make it look wonderful. This particular Halloween they had scary pumpkin helium balloons. I loved them, So when the time came to take all the decorations down, we were allowed to take the balloons if we wanted. I took one and left that night and began my drive home. Going down a hill in the dark I looked in my mirror and I swear my heart stopped. Gradually rising up was this scary pumpkin face. So always check the back seat!

Always, always switch lights on. You can be sitting on the sofa or upstairs in bed and you hear a noise. In the movies they go and investigate, but don’t put the lights on. WHY! When I hear those noises, all the lights are going on! There have been times, during the night, when I hear something and have woken Scott up and have made him check each room in the house just to be sure, all the lights go on! So please put them on if you hear something. I imagine if somebody or something is there, they will soon scarper. If the electrics been cut, well that’s another story, so make sure you know where your torches are kept!

Never ever leave your friends, you will deal with the horrors together otherwise you will not make it. Every group horror movie, they always split up….why! It is not worth it. Stick together, be supportive and make sure you don’t leave anyone behind. Hold hands if you need to, walk with everyone facing outward in a circle so you can see anyone approaching. The likelihood is if you split up one group will most certainly be bumped off and only one or two from the other group will survive. So don’t go your separate ways.

Don’t live in isolation or go on holiday to an isolated house/log cabin/caravan. I’m not saying living in a street with many houses will keep you safe – but it does increase your chances. Now, realistically, most people in these places are safe, as no one is going to go to the middle of nowhere to find you, if they have a street full of houses to choose from….well, not the case in horror films, so just be wary! If things start to go wrong or your gut is trying to tell you something, get in the car/boat/plane and just get out of there!

If you feel like someone is watching you, the chances are there is someone watching you. Remove yourself from where you are and go get a friend and check it out together – or even better, a group. Don’t shrug it off, if it keeps happening. Again, following your gut!

Never go into the basement. Now this isn’t such a big thing in the UK as most houses don’t have them. But I know lots of other countries and in particular the US do. Have a light switch, beside the door to the basement. You do not want to have to go all the way into the basement to switch a light on. If you can, just don’t go down there at all.

Don’t stop running to look behind you. Just run. If you are trying to get away from someone or something….run, you need to focus on getting out of there! If you are thinking about looking back, then you are currently doing a darn good job of out running them, so go go go!

Make sure you have one good friend who will always believe you no matter how far fetched it may be. You know when people tell you, ‘you’re being silly’ and ‘it’s not possible’. Well this is where it is good to have a friend or two you can trust, so if crazy things start happening, monsters appearing, ghosts or spirits haunting you or just creepy things happening. Speak to them, so no matter what happens, you can tackle it together, rather than being on your own. Again, a group of friends may be useful here!

Clowns – Just avoid. Full Stop!

Never say “I’ll be right back’. They actually tell you this in the movie Scream! So just don’t leave your group and also, if you need to use the bathroom, then go in pairs and have one wait outside the door – although that is splitting you up. So just don’t go! Good luck with that!!

If all else fails, just watch rom coms or comedies, at least they come with their own set of rules or guidelines!

Good Luck out there this week, be safe and look after you!

Thank you for reading…..In the time I was writing this, I jumped twice! My phone beeped and the fridge/freezer made a noise! Maybe I should watch a Rom Com!

Love Emma

xx

One more lesson… Never, but never, put your windscreen wipers on when it’s pouring with rain and you’re driving an old American car along a windy road in the DARK! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ
