We are getting closer to the end of my A-Z of Wellbeing series and this month we are on the penultimate letter Y. You wont find a yacht in sight! Although perhaps relaxing on a yacht would be great for your own wellbeing, so if you are lucky enough to have one, enjoy a wonderful day.
Y
Yoga – Whether you do this or not, you will be aware of what it is. Yoga is suitable for everyone, any age and any ability. Yoga is a series of postures and breathing to help relax the body and mind. Many people attend a class, others do this at home on their own, perhaps following a YouTube video. It’s not about being perfect in each pose, instead it’s about doing the best you can. Forget perfection. It is called yoga practice for a reason. When you are in the class, don’t worry about what other people are doing or if they are doing better than you. Everyone is different and everyone’s body is different so don’t compare to others. Go at your own pace. It is your practice and you do what you can without forcing your body into various poses. Your yoga teacher will help you to make suitable adjustments should you need it.
There are many types of yoga such as Hatha, Vinyasa, Kundalini, Ashtanga, Restorative and Yin to name but a few. Do a little research to find out which is suitable for you and what you would like. Take a look online and watch some videos, take a few classes or ask around to find what works for you.
You can practice yoga as often as you wish and the more often you practice will see you reap the benefits sooner. Some of the benefits include improved flexibility, decrease in stress and anxiety, build strength and muscle tone, ease back pain and deeper/better breathing, So what are you waiting for, give yoga a go today.
Ylang Ylang – It is a sweet smelling warming essential oil, steam distilled from flowers. The name means ‘flower of flowers’. This oil is great to use when you have had a fright or a shock. It is an anti depressant and a sedative. Therefore it is calming and relaxing and good for anxiety. It helps to slow down a racing heart. It is great to use in a vaporiser or mix with a carrier oil for a relaxing massage. Please note that using too much of it can give rise to a headache or feeling nauseous, so use it sparingly. Always be cautious when using essential oils, only use 100% pure oil and mix with a carrier oil.
You – How often do you think about you or put yourself first? This week, try to get some ‘you time’ even if it is only 5 minutes. We often feel guilty about putting ourselves first. Do something you love and can fit into the timescale. Read, do yoga, cook, walk, run, swim, chat to a friend, garden, cycle, bake etc. Think about what you need or want right now? What makes you happy? If you are able too, spend a whole day doing things you want, eating your favourite food, doing your favourite activities, watching your favourite movies etc. Go on, be kind to you and enjoy your time guilt free.
Yes – Are you guilty of saying yes to everything? Are you scared you will miss out if you say no? What about work? Do you say yes to everything and find yourself becoming overwhelmed with the volume of work you have and not sure what to do first? Be kind to yourself and start saying no and making people aware you are unable to help right now. Make a plan to ease your workload. In your personal life, if you are trying to please everyone, stop and think about what YOU want. Don’t go to a party or a night out because you feel you should, you don’t need a reason to say no. Do what makes you feel good.
But saying yes to things can also be great. Say yes to new adventures and experiences. Say yes to invitations that you really want to do. Say yes to yourself and start doing all the things you are afraid of but want too. This is a great way to enrich your life.
I hope these words have given you some interesting food for thought. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Thank you for reading.
Look after you and have a great week.
Love Emma xx
