The weather this week has been dramatic, Storm Babet took hold of the UK and Ireland and really went to town on her. The storm raged on, the winds caused damaged and the rivers rose and caused severe damage to people’s homes, villages and towns. Nothing was left un touched by the storm.
I found myself using the word ‘wild’ a lot of the time this week. As I described the weather and what was happening to my colleagues around the globe.
Wild. This is nature. It cannot be tamed, it cannot be trained. Nature will do as it pleases, when it pleases and nobody can tell it otherwise.
As devastating and destructive as nature is, you have to admire it. We live in a beautiful world and although we are at the mercy of the wild force that nature is, it can be calm and tranquil too.
We are part of nature. We forget this, we see ourselves apart from it, as a separate entity. But we came from nature, evolved from it and it is only because we live in houses, drive cars, go on holiday and interact with each other on a daily basis that we feel apart from it. Our lives are man made rather than natural.
How can you incorporate nature into your daily life? Thinking about the wild and calming aspects of nature what can you do in your life that reflects this.
Wild
I am not saying be destructive but try to bring out your inner wildness. Thinking about your day to day life, where can you incorporate a little bit of ‘wild’. Remember your definition of wild will be different to what others will be. For example, wild to you could mean wearing non matching socks and to someone else it could be quitting their job and travelling around the world. So don’t feel your ‘wild’ isn’t ‘wild’ enough, it means something different to us all.
If you aren’t sure what to do or what wild even means to you, then get a blank bit of paper or document and write the word WILD in the centre and then think of everything this conjures up for you. it could be other words that resonate or actions you deem to be wild. Be daring and unafraid of what you write down, you don’t need to do anything from the list, it is there to help you explore your thoughts and possibilities.
Now you have your list, score out anything that is illegal or immoral. You don’t want to be getting into trouble with the law or your family/friends. This is not giving you licence to be a criminal. I know you are not about to do this, but just wanted to be sure.
Is there anything on your list you would love to do, even if you feel it is out of reach? Pick something small and start there. Your wildness doesn’t need to be extreme as I said, perhaps wearing odd socks feels freeing to you, or what about ordering a takeaway and eating it in your bed, or staying in your pyjamas all day. There is no right or wrong.
You could build up to something big, for example if your wildest dream is to take a car for a spin on a racetrack then book the experience well in advance and work up to it. Or you want to learn to ride a horse but that feels a bit too much for now, then why not ask your local stables if you can come up and meet the horses first as you are unsure if it is for you.
Calm
Equally, you can work out what this means to you using the same method as above. Once again there is no right or wrong. Your idea of adding calm to your day, could be a 5 minute meditation whereas someone else’s is the first 5 minutes of sitting at their desk having their first coffee of the day.
Could you create a calming space in your house? Why not paint a room a calming colour and enjoy the feelings it brings. Or take a break and go for walk in the woods and breath in the earthy scents. Reading could be your calm and give you the inner tranquillity you need.
Think of what you see outside, the stillness of the lake or the calm of the trees. How can you bring stillness into your day. Maybe mountain pose in yoga is for you, breathing slowly as you stand tall with your hands by your side.
There are so many activities or actions you can take to be wild, free and fierce as well as calm, relaxed and serene. Find what works for you and don’t be afraid to shine! We all get lost in the day to day and reality of life so reclaim your natural self and give yourself permission to be unrestrained.
Have a really good week, take care and look after you.
Love Emma xx
