The A – Z Of Aromatherapy – J

It is time again for my A – Z of Aromatherapy post. Today we are looking at the letter J. There are not many so let’s get started and see what we can discover.

J

Juniper – To get the best oil, use the oil made from the berries of the juniper tree, it will be called Juniper berry rather just plain Juniper. This oil is known for being an antiseptic, diuretic and detoxifier. If you suffer from cystitis this is a great essential oil to help treat it, but please do ensure you speak with a doctor first particularly if there is blood or pus in your urine. Juniper can work alongside medical treatment but always check first. The best method to help in this situation is a bath. Mix 3-4 drops of juniper essential oil in with your bath water, Make sure the water isn’t too hot. A bath is also helpful if you are feeling emotionally drained, feeling overwhelmed or having a crisis, juniper is a great oil for helping lighten your mental load, if you can’t have a bath, put a few drops on a tissue and inhale.

Juniper oil is good if you have overindulged on alcohol as it will help you to detoxify, you just have to make it to the bathroom and draw yourself a bath as above and relax, you may wish to put an eye mask on if it helps.

Juniper has a woody scent so is suited for those who dislike the floral fragrances many oils have. The oil works well on acne, however, be aware that the skin will likely get worse before it gets better – this is known as the healing crisis.

Mix 2-3 drops with at least 10ml of carrier oil and if you suffer from cramps massage the effective area regularly. If you suffer from retained water, a massage of the stomach area can be most helpful. It also helps with rheumatism, arthritis or gout but you may prefer to have a bath or use a compress instead of a massage.

It is good to use around the house as a disinfectant. Mix several drops in with water and use it to clean surfaces.

Do not use whilst pregnant.

Jasmine – This is a very expensive oil with a lovely exotic fragrance. Whilst you cannot use this oil during your pregnancy, it is however, most helpful when you are in labour. Use in a massage blend on the abdomen and lower back and it will help to relieve pain in the beginning phases of labour. Be aware though as it does strengthen contractions. This oil works well after birth if suffering from postnatal depression, but it also works for those feeling sad or lacking in confidence. Massage is the best way to help in these situations, however a room fragrance can be helpful too.

This is a relaxing oil that is also good for use in skincare, particularly if you suffer from dry and sensitive skin. Mix a drop with your usual face cream and apply as normal. Always use sparingly.

Joints – if you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis or swollen joints massage the area gently with juniper essential oil and carrier oil mix. Or have a bath using juniper and relax into it and let it get to work.

Please note: Always ensure you follow any instructions regarding essential oils or treatments. Never ingest oils or use them internally. Proceed with caution, particularly if you are pregnant and/or have epilepsy. Seek advice before using any essential oil or treatment as some are not to be used during pregnancy or with epilepsy. Never use essential oils neat on your skin as this can cause irritation (Lavender oil is an exception). If any irritation occurs whilst using the oils, even with a carrier oil, then rinse the affected area and discontinue use.

Thank you for reading and I hope this gives you a small insight into the benefits of essential oils. Join me next month when I will be looking at the letter K.

Have a great week and look after you!

Love Emma xx
