I may be wrong, but it does feel as though the seasons are changing. There has been a nip in the air over the last few days, the leaves are starting to turn and despite not having much of a summer, the temperature is definitely cooling. As I begin to push my summer clothes to the back of the wardrobe, and as much as I don’t wish to think summer is over. Autumn is certainly on the horizon so lets have a look at what you can do for your wellbeing this season to make you feel good.
- Don’t let the weather stop you from going outside and getting fresh air each day. Wrap up cosy and keep moving. Or do a random exercise outside each morning or evening and set yourself a challenge for 30 days, you might want to skip for 5 minutes each day or to hop on the spot for 5 minutes. Have fun and don’t be too serious about it all. Enjoy the different seasons and notice how they make you feel. take time to just be outside, breath in and out slowly for 10 minutes and look around you. Although the weather can be a pain, don’t let a little rain or wind stop you. Put on the appropriate clothes and get out there. It doesn’t matter if you get wet, when you get back have a lovely warm bath or a hot shower and put some cosy clothes on.
- If the weather is making you feel a bit sad because summer is disappearing then pull out your favourite clothes for autumn and wear them. Nothing gives you a confidence boost like feeling good in clothes you love. Why not go through your wardrobe and have a good sort out, move your summer things to the back. You may decide to give some clothes to charity if you no longer like them or want them. Dress each day in a way that makes you smile.
- Drinking water is very important, regardless of the time of year. But instead of drinking your usual cool water, you might want to have warm water instead or drink herbal teas. There are so many flavours out there for you to try, so you will never get bored. If you do love water, have a hot water with a slice of lemon, to help cleanse your insides.
- During the summer, we catch up with friends, have BBQ’s, go our for lunch, sit outside in a beer garden. Then autumn comes along and we stop planning or meeting our friends or family. Set a regular time to catch up, perhaps an evening a week or a weekend once a month. Remember it doesn’t even need to be for long, go to a restaurant and order a dessert, or sit in a coffee shop and have a hot chocolate and once finished you can head home. Connecting with people is so good for your own wellbeing and theirs.
- Think about what you can eat more or less of to help you feel good. Perhaps you ate a lot of salads during the summer but as the weather cools, you’d rather have something warm and comforting. Look up some healthy comforting recipes online and be sure to cook some seasonal veg to go along with it and fill your plate up with them. You could invite your friends and family over for dinner to taste your new dish.
- Learn something different this autumn. Night classes will soon start up again at local community centres or colleges, take a look and see if there is anything you would like to do. For example, you may have always fancied doing pottery but never go round to it. If you can’t afford the classes, don’t let that stop you from doing it yourself, buy some clay online, watch some YouTube videos for ideas, create the workspace you need and mould and shape the clay. It’s not about doing it perfectly, it’s about letting go of what perfection is, giving it a go and having fun. If you want to paint, then buy paints online and paint – it doesn’t matter if you are the next Davinci or like me, can only do stick figures, let loose and go crazy. It’s not just about the task itself, it’s about the process of losing yourself in a hobby and being in that moment.
I hope this has given you some food for thought. Let me know what you are doing this autumn for your wellbeing.
Thank you very much for reading. I know next week there will likely be lots of sunny weather, but bear the above in mind when autumn does finally strike. Enjoy your week and look after you.
Love Emma xx
