When it comes to travel and life we often here the journey is as important, if not more important than the destination. We see or do things we maybe wouldn’t have otherwise as we slow down and take it in our stride.
But every journey can be fraught with anxiety, stress, tension and upset, particularly if you are traveling with someone else to a destination. But even if you are on your own, the unknown can bring these feelings to the forefront as you worry about the choices you are making.
Below are 8 points to help you make the most of your journey so you can really enjoy your destination:
- Flexibility with your destination – keep your eye on the prize. Have your end point in your mind throughout your journey, but don’t fixate too much on how it will be. Things change, at the start you may know exactly where you want to be, but as you strive towards your goal, going through the ups and downs, your destination may change.
- Veering off course is ok – new paths and opportunities may appear offering you a new or different direction to get to the end result or a new end result. That is absolutely ok, just remember your happiness needs to be the main priority when you get to the end result. So always have this in mind.
- Ride through the storm of emotions – all journeys have their ups and downs of emotions from happiness and joy when things go well to anxiety and stress when it comes to making a decision when things aren’t going to plan. You will get through it though, as the saying goes, “everything will be OK in the end, and if not OK, it’s not the end”.
- Letting go of expectations and perfection – perfection does not exist, try to avoid having an absolute set idea as to what the journey and the destination look like. You will only be disappointed if things don’t go to plan. Be flexible.
- Is your journey really complete? – when you get to the end destination, is your journey really over or has it just begun? The destination is a new beginning of a fresh chapter in your life. Now it is about making this ending the norm and part of your day to day, giving you time to begin a new adventure or add on to your new life.
- Slow down and enjoy each moment – we always want to rush and get to the end as fast as we possibly can, but be careful as you could miss out on something magical. As I’ve said be flexible as you may discover something right up your street when you slow down and enjoy each moment.
- You do you – be yourself throughout the whole of your adventure and don’t be swayed by others’ opinion if it does not feel right. Sometimes you may not have the answer and look to others for guidance. Follow your inner compass and go with what is right for you. Other peoples opinions and advice can be great in helping to decide what does or doesn’t work for you. Be you 100% of the time.
- Keep a journal – why not record your journey from the start by creating a journal. Write in it each day, noting how you are feeling, what is working or isn’t, what has changed, what you are excited about and how your overall journey is going. Documenting the process can help you to see how far you have come, particularly if you are having a moment of stress, frustration or annoyance if things are not going to plan. Once you have arrived at your destination and start your next chapter, you will always have a record of your journey you can look back on.
Destinations can often be a disappointment if we have rushed to get through the journey as quickly as possible. Think of a holiday, the journey might feel tense and anxious if flights are delayed or traffic is busy and you take longer than it should to get there. But the journey helps you to let go of the normal every day life and to switch off and relax so you arrive all set to enjoy yourself. Use your journey as the time to breath deep and enjoy what it has to offer.
Thank you for reading, have a great week and remember enjoy all parts of your adventures as you never know where they may lead.
Love Emma xx
