It is time again for the latest in my series of the A-Z of Aromatherapy. Today we are looking at the letters U and V. Let’s take a look to see what we can discover.
U
Unwind – if you are coming home after a busy or stressful day, there are many things you can do to relax and unwind using essential oils. A great combination is lavender with camomile, neroli or vetiver. These oils are great for dealing with stress and helping you to relax and unwind. To get the benefit of these oils put 2-3 drops in an oil burner or vaporiser to disperse the beautiful scent throughout the room. Breathe it in slow and deep. If a bath is more your thing then mix a few drops of all into a bath to help you relax, or add a drop or two to your body lotion and gently rub into your arms and legs as well as your feet. A massage with these oils will help to ease tension and any anxiety helping you to unwind.
Uplifting – Are you feeling a bit flat and in need of a boost? Then there are a number of essential oils that can help. Grab your vaporiser and add in a drop or two of any of the following essential oils which are good antidepressant oils. Bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, neroli, and ylang-ylang these oils are great for giving your mood a boost and help to uplift you.
V
Vetiver – Known as ‘the oil of tranquillity’ this essential oil is extremely relaxing. It has a unique aroma which many people do not like. However, this oil is great if you are struggling with your mental health or stress related issues. It has a sedative and calming effect so is great if you are feeling anxious, irritable or struggling to sleep. The oil is good for using as an antiseptic so can be used on small cuts or spots.
Verbena – this essential oil can help with digestive problems likely caused by stress and anxiety. Used in a massage combined with a carrier oil, it can help calm and relax reducing the symptoms of stress and anxiety as well as help you to sleep better.
Verruca – if you are someone who swims a lot, you will likely have had to deal with verruca. Whilst caused by a viral infection, they can be treated by dabbing on a drop of lemon oil or tea tree oil onto the effected area. It would be better if you alternate the two essential oils for a short period of time to ensure they continue to work. Apply a dressing or plaster each day.
Vomiting – the last thing you may feel like doing after being sick is massaging your stomach. But by mixing a little carrier oil with a drop of peppermint oil and applying it to your stomach and very gently massaging in a clockwise direction can help relieve the muscles of the stomach as it is an antispasmodic essential oil.
Vaporiser – This is a great way to get essential oils diffused into the air of the room you are in. Add water and then add several drops of the essential oils you wish to use – whether to fragrance the room ,help you relax or heal your headache. I highly recommend using a vaporiser it can be used daily helping you with many ailments as well as make your house smell nice.
Please note: never ingest essential oils, use them internally or use them undiluted on your skin. If you are epileptic or pregnant, there are some oils you should avoid entirely, always check first. If you suffer an allergic reaction please discontinue use. Always proceed with caution and if in doubt, do not use or seek advice in the first instance. Always buy and use 100% pure essential oils, there are many imitations out there so please be aware.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this months A-Z series. Join me next month when I’ll be looking at the letters W & X.

Love Emma xx
