It’s the 1st February, one month into the year. How has the first month treated you?
Did you set goals for this year? Or plans you want to achieve? How are you getting on with them? Often many of us have given up on our goals by now, for many reasons. It is often too hard to make the changes as we have unrealistic expectations on what we can achieve in a short space of time. But we start off excited and want to push on. When you think of this, what is it you are chasing? Is it the dream? The satisfaction or indeed the feeling?
When goals are set we are so focused on what we want to achieve rather than how we want to feel. Whilst we will never be sure how you will feel. Focus on how you feel now and what you can do to change the feelings if you are not happy or equally if you are excited what you can do to keep the motivation levels high to continue the feelings of excited with each step closer you get. It is this that will help us get there.
Here are 7 points to think about to help you achieve your goals, focusing on the feelings.
- What are your goals? – Write down your goals. Simple. What are they and what is it you are setting out to achieve?
- How do you feel now? – What are your current feelings towards your goals? Are you excited about them and want to keep going? Do you feel you are lacking inspiration and not sure it is what you want? Would you say are you energised and raring to continue? One month in are you happy to keep moving forward to achieve your goals? Write down or just think about how they are making you feel right now.
- How do you want to feel? – Think of the end result. You’ve achieved it, all your hard work and effort have now paid off. Congratulate yourself as you are there. What feelings does this conjure up for you? Will you feel satisfied and proud? Will you feel excited as you know achieving this goal is just the beginning of your journey? Use these feelings to propel you forward.
- What are your challenges? – Think about what could get in the way of you achieving your goals. How does that make you feel? If you have an idea as to what could stand in your way of reaching your goal how does that make you feel? More determined to get there or ugh it is going to make it harder and you’re not bothered, then is the goal right for you? Check how you feel at this point, there is no point pushing ahead if really you aren’t looking to rise to the challenge.
- What are you goals now with feelings? – Now you have thought about how you feel about your goals currently, and how you want to feel rewrite your goals and attach the feelings you want to experience to it. For example, if your goal is I want to learn to run 5k by June. If you attach your feeling to it, it now is I want to learn to run 5k by June to feel healthier, happier and know I can do anything I put my mind too. Focus on being healthier and happier
- Keep checking in with how you feel as you move towards attaining your goal – whether your goal will take you one month or 10 months to achieve, keep checking in, reflecting on how you are progressing as well as how you feel towards them. Ideally, you want to feel motivated and excited but if not, what has changed? Are you just having a moment or do you want to amend? You need to be flexible to ensure you can tweak your goals as needed for the feelings you want to have. But remember, sometimes, partway through working towards your goals you may realise the goal is no longer what you want that’s ok, it is your life and you need to be happy with what you are doing and it has to work for you.
- Once achieved your goal how do you feel? – Now you have achieved your goal how are you feeling? Is it how you thought you would feel? Does achieving this goal, spur you on to do more?
However you are getting on with your goals, focus on how you are feeling and how you want to feel. This can help you to see if the goal you are setting is right for you.
Enjoy the journey to get there with feelings.
Thank you for reading, have a great week. Look after you!
