Curiosity is an Opportunity

Sitting on the sofa watching TV, Scott started talking – none of which made sense. I thought he was speaking about what we were watching and trying to solve ‘who’d dunnit’, even though it made no sense there either. Eventually, he said, look outside. So I did. There, climbing in, then out, then back in again of our neighbour’s upstairs window, was our cat Lily.

We called on her and whistled but she was having none of it. She was having a great time and wasn’t interested in coming to us.

Scott hotfooted it to our neighbours and rang the doorbell to let them know about our curious cat and whilst explaining to him, Lily pops out from down the side of the house. Clearly she had gone all through his house and come out into his back garden.

Lily loves to be outside but is very skittish when it comes to being approached, so we were very surprised she would put herself in that situation. However, she is a cat and is curious and loves to explore and we will be keeping an eye on her.

Whilst us humans are curious about a lot of things, we tend not to climb through windows and essentially break into our neighbours homes. But it makes you think, (not about breaking in, but about being curious). We get so stuck in our day to day, we might be missing out on opportunities of exploration or digging deeper into a subject.

Lily clearly wants to know what our neighbours house is like or how she can go in a window and out another way. But what do you want to do or know? What is your starting point of curiosity?

For example, at present I am exploring ideas for our garden, our bedroom I have started decorating and also the idea of doing a group walk/relaxation in the woods. There is a lot there and it certainly more than I can do each day or evening. I am curious about them all and what the outcome will be. These are the top three things in my mind at the moment, I would like to explore, these are my starters.

What ideas or areas of curiosity do you have? What would you like to spend more time exploring or working on?

Humans are curious by nature, we have had to be to get where we are today. It will be very rare if you sat down one day and said “I am curious about the stars in the sky, I am going to get a telescope to discover more”. You would instead go about it and just do it, rather than declare your curiosity. As someone I know always says “if you have an itch, you need to scratch it”. This is so true.

Any curiosity you have is an opportunity to discover more. This could be to explore a new venture, understand a subject better or find out more about a country you want to visit. Take the opportunities as they present themselves to you. For example, decorating our bedroom, bright green, I was really intrigued to find out how it would look and the only way was to paint the room. Despite the paint being patchy and I’m currently in the process of fixing it, the colour is fantastic and perfect. It worked out well, I am very glad I explored my curiosity. Nothing big or even of interest to anyone but me and Scott but it shows you how something small can be an opportunity of discovery.

Another example could be your job, are you looking to specialise? Is there an area you want to know more about and are curiously looking to further your career? What an exciting time for you. Perhaps you need to sit more exams or do a part time course to help.

Maybe you have always wanted to go to Thailand on holiday, and are exploring opportunities to go and what you can do when you arrive.

If you are curious about anything, what can you do to find out more? Where do you start? Sometimes you just have to start by asking Google or any other search engine or even ChatGPT. This can give you a starter for 10. If you have no idea where to begin, then this can help to get you started. But remember to fact check all the information you receive.

Our curiosity is often satisfied through reading an article or book, visiting a museum or researching on the internet. It doesn’t have to be something immense like signing up to do a degree or masters in a subject. It might be you know someone who is knowledgeable on a subject and can chat to them about it.

If you have an interest then go and explore. Life is about being curious and discovering more, so take the opportunities as they present themselves and have a wonderful adventure. But don’t climb through your neighbours window.

Thank you for reading, have a great week and look after you.

Love Emma xx
