Wellbeing At Home

Where do you live? A flat? A house? A boat? What about the location? In a city, village or in the country? There are likely a number of reasons why you chose to live where you do, from work, family, friends to sights and sounds and amenities.

Your home is where you are comfortable, comforted and safe. It shelters you from the elements and is filled with warmth and love. Your home is your sanctuary and a place for you to take care of yourself.

Think about this. You have had a hard day at work and you finally get to your front door, unlock it and step through, letting out a huge sigh and a big ahhhhhhhh as your work day is now officially over and you can enjoy some down time. Your shoulders drop and you begin to feel relaxed. Your on your own time now and can do what you want.

Just by closing the door to your day can help you to feel good. Knowing you are home and in your own space is bliss. We do so much in our houses to help with our self care and wellbeing without realising. Here are 5 examples and you will likely do some or all:

Exercise – Whether you are doing yoga in your pj’s or a full on dance workout in your house. Exercise is great to do in your own home as you do not need to get properly dressed or open the curtains if you do not wish. This is a great way to make you feel good and get your heart pumping. You might choose to do a workout before you leave for work or as soon as you get home. There are so many exercise videos you can do that are available online, so what are you waiting for, get your yoga on or get moving without leaving the comfort of your own home.

Pets – When you come home from work and your dog or cat or whatever pet you have greets you at the door and is excited to see you, whatever kind of day you have had up to that point, disappears. The best thing about pets is the hugs you can get from them when you need it most. They are always there for you and love you unconditionally – well, provided you feed them or give them a number of treats of course! Stroking your pet can help to lower your blood pressure and reduce stress. A great way to relax after a busy or mentally draining day at work. So what are you waiting for, go snuggle with your pet now and feel the benefits.

Bath – The ultimate way to help you relax. Put some of your favourite bubble bath in or bath oil, put relaxing tunes on, light a few candles (be careful) and either close your eyes and relax, resting your head on the bath or read your book and enjoy immersing yourself into the story as well as the bath. This is a brilliant way to help you wind down after a busy day, helping you to switch off, and be ready for the land of nod.

Sleep – Ahhh bliss, just what is needed and the best thing for your own wellbeing. Make sure you get a good nights sleep every night and try to get yourself into a routine. Your body and mind will thank you. If you find it difficult to sleep due to excessive light, such as street lamps or the summer sun, then get yourself an eye mask to help you sleep in darkness. If it is too noisy then get some ear plugs to help you sleep or listen to some music or soothing nature sounds to cover the external sounds. Make sure your room isn’t too hot or too cold either, a good temperature to keep your room at is roughly between 16-18 degrees centigrade.

Beauty routine – How often do you actually pay attention when you are applying moisturiser to your face in the morning and equally when you are cleansing your face in the evening. Both these routines you likely do automatically. But they can be a very calming or soothing way to start or end your day. Start paying attention to what you are doing, taking your time to be gentle to your skin and making it a kind and tender ritual and not just a routine. Try to be mindful and not rush through it. Focus on the smells and how it makes your skin feel as you gently wash, exfoliate or rub on moisturiser. Notice day in and day out any changes in your skin. Your skin deserves the best so treat it with kindness.

Your home is a huge part of your wellbeing, it is easy to forget this, but each day pay attention to what you do in your house that makes you feel good. There are so many things such as cooking and dancing as you listen to music making your favourite dinner. Or singing in the shower whilst you scrub your body all over with a beautifully smelling body scrub. Even running up and down the stairs is good for you. Whatever you do on a daily basis to feel good about yourself, enjoy the sanctity of your own home as you do it. It’s your space to take time for you.

Take care and thank you for reading. Have a lovely week.

Look after you! Love Emma xx
