Today the weather is matching my mood. It is showery, sunny, cloudy and quite frankly it doesn’t know what it wants to do with itself. Just like me. It feels blugh. Whilst I’m also feeling foggy and fuzzy it is self inflicted. So don’t feel sorry for me, that’s what happens when you mix drinks and know you shouldn’t as your body can no longer deal with it.
Nope, it wasn’t a big night out or a party. It was a few drinks whilst watching tv. How that can go badly is beyond me.
Anyway, my body feels slow, my thoughts and my head feels heavy. Everything is hard and the simplest of things take a lot of effort.
Thinking about it, maybe days like these have their own purpose and plan.
Whilst I certainly don’t recommend this and it isn’t something I planned, there is something good about being forced to stop and take things slowly. Despite the painkillers kicking in and the water doing it’s thing, when you feel hungover you cannot rush, be productive or think a lot. Your energy levels are low, your motivation levels are low, and no matter what, you can’t change this feeling. You have to ride through it and wait until tomorrow when you know you will wake up feeling AMAZING!
Watching and hearing the rain as it falls, is a great sign that I am not missing out today. It is the world telling me to have a slow day. Well, this is how I am viewing it. I know I will survive and get through the day and on the plus side, I am feeling a lot better than I was when I first woke up.
Today I will be still and that is ok, I’m leaning into it and accepting it will be a day to go with the flow.
I will listen to the rain, I will be slow and I will let go of berating myself as it will not help. Tomorrow will be a new day and will be a new start. Whilst this isn’t normal for me, my body can’t handle what it once previously could and so occasionally I forget. Then, when I wake up and feel terrible my body forces me to take note.
I know I am all about wellbeing, and what we can do to support our mental health as well as our bodies. But sometimes wellbeing isn’t about doing the right things, it’s about listening to what your mind and body need now, in the moment. It’s not about reflecting on what could have been but it is focusing on your needs now. At this moment in time my body and mind are asking for peace, stillness, water and calm.
I want an easy day, with little or no effort required. I am using all the brain power possible to write this post and know once I have I will feel like I have achieved something.
If you have ever had a day like this, when you feel hungover, tired and slow, perhaps you will understand the comfort of being still, having no plans and riding through it. It isn’t where we want to be, it isn’t glamourous or clever, but it is real. And you can’t be much more real until you feel so sorry for yourself for not thinking ahead the night before as to how you will feel today.
On the flip side of this, it often means, you had an incredibly fun night and enjoyed it all. And surely this is what is important and should be the focus of the day.
So having no where to go and allowing yourself to have these slow rainy days, gives us the space we need to be human and to not care that we have missed a day where we could have done more.
If you are reading this and feeling similar, I hope you manage to find some stillness and softness to your day. This is your time to do all you need to feel alright, such as have an ice cold drink or a plate of chips with cheese, or wrap yourself up in a cosy blanket and watch your favourite movie or series. No thinking required. All you need to do, is be kind to yourself, breathe out and know it is okay to be where you are today as this feeling will pass.
Take care of yourself, and have an easy day.
And most importantly look after you!
Love Emma xx
