I watched the movie Project Hail Mary yesterday. Having watched the trailer when it was out at the cinema, I wasn’t convinced. However, we pressed play and OH MY GOD. This movie was truly amazing, whether that is because my expectations were low (sorry) or whether it was truly out of this world, I do not know. But it was a beautiful movie.
I won’t give anything away but for me two of the key themes were about being alone and loneliness. Now while both can be negative, being alone can be a positive. Whereas loneliness is not.
Very few of us will ever imagine what it is like to be alone in space day in and day out. Loneliness would creep in pretty quickly, there is no one to talk to, discuss life with or have dinner with. Your life would not be a shared experience.
Us humans are designed to be part of a community, no matter how big (or small). We want people around us and we also want our own space. But this isn’t what my post is about.
The other theme, that went through the movie for me was trust. This is what I want to focus my post on today.
The main character worked hard and was trusted by numerous people that he was the right person for the role. They had confidence in him, even when he didn’t believe it.
If you think this has likely happened to you without even realising it, for example, a task at work you may be unsure of what to do, but your manager knows you can run with it and make it work. Or trust from a beloved pet that you will take care of it. These may seem simple enough, however, if you are not feeling like you can do a good job, then it can be a challenge to jump right in and accept ownership.
Trusting others is similar to the above, you go out and leave your kids with a babysitter/family member/friend etc and you have trust they will look after your children and take care of them.
How much trust do you place in yourself? Do you trust yourself with any of the above? Are there areas of your life where you can’t be trusted? Not to get too deep here, but it could be drugs, alcohol, infidelity, food etc.
For some, trusting our instincts and who we are comes easy, it is a natural way, but for others, it can be difficult to be in certain situations and know you will choose the right way forward. But trusting our gut and knowing when a situation feels right or wrong, is what helps to keep us safe.
The one area of life we often find very difficult, is to trust the unknown. Sometimes you have to dive right in and blindly put your faith in a person or situation without having any idea what the outcome will be.
Think about it, you quit your job as you are being treated badly but have no job lined up. You are trusting things will improve and the situation will be rectified. You are not sitting around waiting for something to magically appear. Instead you are doing all you can to move forward while believing the process will support you and take you where you need to be.
Or you reach a crossroad in your life, and both options are a possibility but neither are guaranteed. Sometimes not choosing is still a choice. Leaving it up to the universe to highlight the right path can feel uncomfortable but sitting in this space often opens the right door for you.
However, don’t let that put you off. Yes, it is scary, but none of us know the future. But throughout your life you have likely noticed how things always have a way of working themselves out. Sometimes with surprising results. Trusting in the process doesn’t mean you pretend everything will be alright, it means you are allowing life to unfold without trying to be in control of every outcome.
There is a difference between trusting and being reckless. Don’t jump into something without looking at it first. Make sure you know as much as you can about what you are getting into before making any life changing decisions. Trust should be along for the journey and not sabotaging the path beneath your feet.
Most importantly, if you don’t trust someone or something, then walk away from the situation.
When you let trust guide you it can take you on an incredible journey, allowing your life to open you to new and interesting experiences. Project Hail Mary showed me the last trust is about having courage to take the next step into the unknown.
Thank you for reading, look after you.
Love Emma xx

This was beautifully written and such a great topic. Learning how to navigate trust throughout life is so important. I feel we first have to learn how to trust ourselves before we can trust others or situations that may arise.
